PREGNANCY SUPPORT

You may be facing a personal crisis because of the possibility of an unplanned pregnancy. You don't have to face it alone. We are here to help you and we offer many services to assist you. All of our services are free of charge and everything is kept confidential. 

Have you (or your partner) had a positive pregnancy test? Pregnancy symptoms include:

  • Menstrual period is a week or more late

  • Breast swelling and/or tenderness

  • Nausea, a loss of appetite and possible vomiting

  • Feeling tired or sluggish

  • Bloating in the abdomen

  • Frequent urination

 

Options offers free pregnancy tests. Come visit our offices or make an appointment with one of our counsellors who will assist you with this. 

 

The test is positive, what now? We know that this can be a very difficult time and that you might want a quick solution. It is important to take take time to really think about your options. It might feel overwhelming to think about talking to someone, we want to encourage you (and your partner) to come see a counselor at Options. 

What are my options? Our dedicated counselors will take time to explain your various options and give you all the information you need to make the right choice for your life. 

Parenting - The option of parenting (with or without your partner) is a big decision and you need all the information and support that you can get. We offer counseling and emotional support for both parents, Pre-Birth classes taught by our registered nurse, a limited ultra-sound, physical necessities from our pantry (baby clothes, toiletries, etc.), help with breastfeeding and support groups.  

Adoption - A permanent legal placement of your baby with other parents is also an option to consider. A trained counsellor will explain the adoption process to you  and give you all the information needed to make a decision. Adoption might be the right option for you if you can't see yourself as a parent or don't have much support. Should you feel like parenting might be an option later on you can also talk to a counselor about foster care (formally or with family / a support network)

Abortion - At this stage you might feel that your only option is to have an abortion. If you are thinking about an abortion (termination of pregnancy) it is important to have all the information before making a decision. Some of the questions you might have that we can answer include:

  • What is an abortion?

  • How are abortions performed?

  • What is actually inside a pregnant uterus?  

  • What are the risks of having an abortion?

  • How could an abortion affect my future?

Have you had an abortion in the past? The decision to have an abortion is often done in a time of intense stress and crisis. Some people say they felt relief immediately after, but later experience emotional and spiritual distress that may be connected to their choice. Both men and women are affected. As it is so difficult to talk about what happened, they feel very alone and don't know where to get help. Some of the following symptoms may be connected to a past abortion:

  • Nightmares and flashbacks

  • Depression

  • Suicidal thoughts

  • Feelings of guilt

  • Anger

  • Avoidance or isolation

  • Increase in drug or alcohol use

  • Low self-esteem

  • Self-abuse

  • Struggle in relationships

  • Sleep, appetite and sexual disturbances 

  • Fertility concerns

  • Spiritual struggle
